Racine Threat going to MSFL Championship Game

KENOSHA - The Racine Threat are one victory away from the Mid-States Football League championship.Behind dominating performances from running back Greg Sanders and quarterback Ben Adrian, the Threat defeated the McHenry (Ill.) Pirates 51-21 Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the MSFL Tournament at Ameche Field in Kenosha.Sanders rushed for 230 yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries. Adrian completed 14 of 27 passes for 276 yards and three touchdowns. Two of his touchdown passes went to Mike Pottinger, who had six receptions for 128 yards.The Threat (8-2) will play the winner of Saturday night's semifinal between the undefeated Lincoln Way Patriots and Mid-States Steel for the championship. That game will be played Saturday in Chicago."We're not celebrating quite yet," Threat coach Brent Moss said. "We haven't accomplished anything until we reach the goal we set in training camp and that is to win the MSFL championship."The Threat spotted the Pirates a 7-0 lead when McHenry drove 60 yards on its opening drive, which was capped by Brandon Benda's 48-yard scoring pass to Matthew Lopez. But it was pretty much the Threat from that point.Sanders answered with a one-yard scoring run that was set up by Adrian's 40-yard pass to Pottinger. After the Threat held the Pirates on downs, Sanders scored on a 2-yard run to give Racine a 14-7 lead.In the second quarter, Adrian threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to Pottinger and T.J. Hearn kicked a 26-yard field goal. The Pirates (5-5) pulled to within 24-14 with 30 seconds left in the second quarter on an 80-yard kickoff return by former University of Wisconsin receiver Travann Hayes.On the Threat's opening possession of the second half, Adrian and Pottinger hooked up on a 33-yard touchdown pass. The Pirates answered with a 27-yard scoring pass from Jeremy Fisher to Rick Lahrman to pull to within 31-21 with 11:48 left in the third quarter, but the Threat then put the game away.Sanders ran six yards for a touchdown, Adrian threw a 76-yard scoring pass to Alfredo Jackson and Sanders scored on a 45-yard run.
