Threat reign over MSFL with title victory

FRANKFORT, ILL. -- If Brent Moss had his way, Greg Sanders would not have played for the Racine Threat Saturday night. "All I want Greg to do is go to college," Moss said. Instead, Sanders was at Frankfort, Ill., helping Moss' Threat win the Mid-States Football League championship. A man who backed up John Clay during Park's 2005 WIAA Division 1 state championship season, rushed for 233 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries to lead the Threat's rout of previously unbeaten Lincoln-Way Patriots 37-14 in the MSFL championship game at Lincoln-Way High School. "He's so tough and he's been overlooked," Moss said. "Greg has been the beat to this team. He comes to play every game and I know he's still got more left in him. Somebody needs to take a look at him." The Threat, who completed a 9-2 season, were also led by quarterback Ben Adrian, who rushed for 56 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 84 yards and two scores. "We bumped heads a little bit, but he really turned around to be the good quarterback I know he can be," Moss said. The Patriots (10-1) scored the first and last touchdowns, but the Threat dominated between those two scores. Racine gained 414 yards on 69 plays and the Patriots were held to 229 on 47 plays. Sanders got the Threat going with a 9-yard touchdown run with 4:28 left in the first quarter. Three more touchdowns came in the second quarter as the Threat all but put the game away by halftime. First, Adrian connected with Mike Pottinger on a 3-yard scoring pass. Then, after Sanders scored on a 10-yard run with 1:53 left in the second quarter, Threat cornerback Jose Contreras intercepted a pass to set up an 8-yard scoring pass from Adrian to Pottinger with eight seconds left. That gave Racine a commanding 27-7 halftime lead. Adrian added a 2-yard scoring run late in the third quarter and T.J. Hearn kicked a 35-yard field goal with 2:41 left in the game. "It's the greatest reward," said left guard Erik Olson, who owns the Threat. "This is the ultimate. I've been in the championship game twice and I lost twice. "The third time was the charm."
